He had a number in mind: 5 tons per hour.

I asked what he was going to do with the output. He said sell it to a biomass plant. I asked what particle size the plant accepted. He did not know.

That one missing number was worth more than the throughput figure he had spent two weeks calculating.

The short answer

A wood shredder reduces wood by speed and torque, and those two numbers decide everything else. Slow, high-torque machines (single shaft, twin shaft, four shaft) cut and shear. Fast, low-torque machines (hammer mills, tub and horizontal grinders) smash and pulverise. They produce different output shapes, tolerate different contamination, and burn different amounts of energy per ton.

Wood buyers almost always start with throughput in tons per hour. It is the least useful number on the sheet, because the same machine produces very different tonnage at different screen sizes. Get the output specification first, then the tonnage at that specification.

A wood shredder is a size-reduction machine for wood waste — pallets, crating, offcuts, demolition timber, stumps, brush and logs. The two families are separated by rotor speed: slow-speed shear machines (roughly 10–80 rpm) and high-speed impact machines (roughly 500–1,800 rpm). The screen sets the output size in both, but only the slow machines are built to survive nails and dirt.

Why wood is not like plastic or paper

Wood has a property the other two do not: it splits along the grain.

Hit a piece of wood hard enough and it splits, whether or not your knife is sharp. That is why impact machines work at all on wood — a high-speed hammer does not need a keen edge, it needs mass and speed. A blunt hammer still breaks a pallet stringer.

It also means wood is directional. A pallet fed end-on behaves completely differently from the same pallet fed flat. A log fed along the grain resists; fed across it, it shears. Feed orientation is a real variable, and it is one reason two plants with the same machine report different capacities.

Then there is moisture, which changes the material more than any other feedstock we deal with:

Humedad

Behaviour

What it does to the machine

Under 15%

Brittle, splits cleanly, dusty

Good output, but dust control is the whole problem

15–25%

Normal pallet and crating range

Works in either machine family

25–40%

Green wood, stringy, smears rather than splits

Hammer mill screens blind over; shear machines cope better

Above 40%

Fresh-cut or waterlogged

Neither family likes it; the answer is drying or a different machine

Green wood through a hammer mill blinds the screen. The machine keeps hammering material that cannot get out, power draw climbs, and output drops. It looks like a capacity problem and it is actually a moisture problem. This is the same trap as picking a screen size on the plastic side — the screen sets the ceiling, but only if material can physically leave.

The four machine families and what each is actually for

Single shaft

Twin shaft

Four shaft

Hammer mill / grinder

Reduction by

Shear against a fixed knife, ram-fed

Two intermeshing rotors, tearing

Two main plus two sizing rotors

Free-swinging hammers, impact

Velocidad del rotor

Slow, around 73 rpm

Slow

Slow

500–1,800 rpm

Control de salida

Screen under the rotor

Internal spacing only, coarse

Sizing grate on the lower rotors

Screen under the rotor

Output shape

Chips, defined by screen

Ragged strips, long pieces

Mixed, second stage refines

Fine, dusty, more uniform

Nails and staples

Tolerated, high torque

Tolerated well

Tolerated

Damage hammers, tolerate poorly

Dirt and stone

Tolerated

Tolerated

Tolerated

Expensive — abrasive wear

Energy per ton

Bajo

Bajo

Bajo

Alta

Noise

Inferior

Inferior

Inferior

Higher, 100–115 dB(A) typical

Best feed

Pallets, crating, offcuts, demolition timber

Bulky, mixed, contaminated

Mixed bulky needing a defined output

Clean, dry, pre-sized wood

The line that matters for most buyers is the contamination row. Wood waste is dirty by nature — pallets come with nails, crating comes with staples and strapping, demolition timber comes with everything. An impact machine is the wrong tool for dirty wood, and that is a mechanical fact, not a preference: a hammer striking a nail at 1,000 rpm transfers that energy into the hammer, the pin and the rotor. A slow rotor with a chunk of steel in the chamber stalls instead of shattering, and a hydraulic ram and reverse control give it back.

Speed, torque and what each costs you

This is the trade every wood buyer is actually making, and it rarely gets stated plainly.

Slow machine (single shaft, around 73 rpm): high torque per revolution, so it shears through a nail instead of exploding on it. Cutting edges last far longer because the contact speed is low. Energy per ton is low. But the machine only clears material as fast as the ram can feed it, and the screen under the rotor limits how fast it can discharge.

Fast machine (hammer mill, 500–1,800 rpm): the rotor is carrying far more kinetic energy and the hammers strike material hundreds of times per second. Throughput on clean, dry, pre-sized wood is much higher. But every nail and every grain of grit wears a hammer, hammers need rotating and replacing, and the energy bill per ton is higher.

Industry figures for this comparison put hammer life at roughly 200–500 hours in abrasive service against 800–2,000 hours for shear knives, and energy consumption around 20–50 kWh per ton for fine grinding against 5–15 kWh per ton for coarse cutting. Those are ranges, not guarantees — the spread inside each range is bigger than the gap between them — but the direction is real and it is why pallet recyclers almost always end up on a slow machine.

Output specification comes first. Really.

Here is the sequence that works, in order:

Who buys the output, and what do they accept? A biomass boiler, a particleboard plant, a mulch bagger and a compost site all specify different particle sizes.

Pick the screen from that number. Screen aperture sets the top size.

Then read the tonnage at that aperture. This is the honest capacity figure.

Then size the machine, with margin for the fact that wood bulk density swings wildly.

Most buyers do this backwards. They buy 5 t/h, then discover their buyer wants 30 mm minus, put a 30 mm screen in, and find the machine now does 2.5 t/h. Nothing was mis-sold. The tonnage they were quoted was real — at a bigger screen.

If you are feeding a size-controlled downstream process, this is exactly the same logic as how a screen sets the ceiling on plastics, and the same accounting as what a shredder actually costs you after you buy it.

The three wood streams, and why they are different problems

Not all “wood waste” is one material. The stream decides the machine more than the tonnage does.

Pallets and crating. Dimensionally regular, low bulk density (a standard pallet occupies far more volume than its weight suggests), and full of nails. This is the classic slow-speed single shaft job: ram-fed, screen-controlled, nails sheared rather than fought. Feed whole pallets if the hopper takes them — pre-cutting adds labour that eats the margin. Volume, not torque, is the real constraint, the same conclusion we reached about drums and IBCs.

Sawmill and joinery offcuts. Clean, dry, uniform, no contamination. This is where an impact machine earns its keep, and where throughput numbers are actually achievable. Slabs, edgings and trim can go straight to a hammer mill with little pre-processing.

Demolition and C&D timber. Mixed, dirty, often with concrete attached, and frequently treated. Treated wood is a separate problem from a machine problem — it usually cannot go to the same outlet as clean wood, so the sorting decision comes before the shredding decision.

For context on how much of this material exists: the US EPA put wood in municipal solid waste at 18.1 million tons in 2018, about 6.2% of the total, of which only 3.1 million tons was recycled — a 17.1% rate — against 12.2 million tons landfilled. Pallets alone are estimated at over 90% of wood packaging. That recycling rate is low because the material is bulky, contaminated and cheap, which is precisely why the machine has to be cheap to run rather than fast.

Self-protection is not optional on wood

Wood arrives with metal in it. A pallet has 60 to 80 nails. Crating has staples and strapping. Demolition timber has fixings nobody removed.

Three layers, in order of cost-effectiveness:

Upstream detection — a metal detector on the infeed stops the machine before the steel reaches the rotor. Cheapest by far. The same logic as putting a metal detector before a plastic crusher.

Hydraulic relief and automatic reverse — when torque spikes, the machine backs off instead of breaking something. This is what makes a slow machine survivable on dirty feed.

Sacrificial wear parts — replaceable counter-knives and screen sections designed to be the thing that dies.

What you are buying in layer two is a torque curve. Ask what the machine does when it meets something it cannot cut, and get the answer in terms of what happens mechanically, not “it has protection.”

Where a plastic shredder fits, and where it stops

We build plastic recycling equipment, so it is fair to ask why we are writing about wood. The answer is that a large part of the machine is the same and a specific part is not.

What carries over: the frame, the rotor, the bearing and gearbox sizing, the hydraulic ram, the drive, the screen arrangement, the duty cycle question. A slow-speed single shaft machine is a slow-speed single shaft machine. If you want to see the architecture, how an industrial single shaft shredder works covers it, and the S Series specification — 600 to 1,850 mm rotor width, 22 to 90×2 kW, 2,800 to 14,000 kg — is the same platform that takes wood.

What does not carry over, and this is the honest part:

Knife geometry. Plastic wants hooks and sharp shear edges that bite and re-cut. Wood wants a thicker, blunter edge that splits and shrugs off impact. Different profile, different steel, different hardness.

Screen and discharge. Wood output is bulky and light; it bridges and it does not fall out the way plastic flake does. Discharge design changes.

Dust. Wood dust is a fire and explosion hazard in a way plastic dust is not. That is a separate engineering discipline — extraction, grounding, and in many jurisdictions an ATEX assessment for the zone around the machine.

Contamination profile. Nails versus a stray bottle cap are not the same problem.

So: the platform transfers, the details do not, and anyone who tells you the same machine covers both without changes is selling you the platform and hoping you do not ask about the knives.

For mixed plastic film streams, the film recycling process is the right starting point instead.

Before you buy: eight questions

What are you selling the output as, and what particle size does that buyer accept?

What is the tonnage at that screen size, not at the default one?

Which of the three streams is it — pallets, clean offcuts, or demolition timber?

What is the moisture content, measured, not assumed?

How much metal is in the feed, and what is upstream of the machine?

Who loads it, and does the hopper take a whole pallet without pre-cutting?

Where does the dust go, and has anyone done a fire-risk assessment?

How many hours continuous, in writing — the same question that separates industrial machines from light ones, as covered in what makes a shredder industrial.

PREGUNTAS FRECUENTES

What is a wood shredder?
A size-reduction machine for wood waste — pallets, crating, offcuts, demolition timber, stumps and brush. Slow-speed machines (10–80 rpm) shear and tear with high torque and tolerate nails; high-speed machines (500–1,800 rpm) smash with hammers and produce finer, more uniform output on clean dry wood. Output size is set by a screen in both cases.

What is the difference between a wood shredder and a wood chipper?
A chipper uses sharp blades to cut clean wood into uniform chips. A shredder uses blunt or hooked cutters, or hammers, to break the material into irregular pieces. Chippers need clean, straight feedstock and dislike nails; shredders handle dirty, bulky or irregular material. Many operations run both.

Can a wood shredder handle pallets with nails in them?
A slow-speed single shaft or twin shaft machine can, because the rotor has the torque to shear a nail and the hydraulic system gives it a way out when it cannot. A hammer mill cannot — the hammer takes the impact and the damage. Always put a metal detector upstream regardless.

How many tons per hour will a wood shredder produce?
It depends almost entirely on the screen size and the bulk density of the feed, and published figures usually assume a large screen on ideal material. Ask for the tonnage at the screen aperture you will actually run. A machine quoted at 5 t/h on a 100 mm screen may do closer to 2 t/h at 30 mm.

Does wet wood need a different machine?
No, it needs a different expectation. Green wood above roughly 25–40% moisture smears rather than splits and blinds hammer mill screens. Slow-speed shear machines cope better with wet wood than impact machines, but throughput still drops. If the material is consistently wet, plan for drying or accept reduced output.

Is a wood shredder the same as a plastic shredder?
The machine platform is largely the same — rotor, frame, ram, drive and screen. The knife geometry, screen and discharge design, and dust handling are not. Wood needs a tougher edge profile, a discharge that will not bridge on bulky light material, and fire and explosion precautions that plastic does not require. Buy it specified for wood, not adapted to it.

Where to go from here

If you are still deciding what class of machine fits your stream, what a shredder is and how it differs from a crusher is the right starting point. If your material is mixed wood and plastic — composite decking, WPC, laminated board — that is a different question again, and closer to how a double rotor machine handles cardboard in its material-tolerance logic.

SLECOTECH (Streamline Eco Tech) designs and manufactures industrial shredders, granulators, washing lines, and complete plastic recycling systems. The company is based in Yuyao, Zhejiang, China, and exports to more than 30 countries.
